I was listening to Swampside Chats talk about Sorel's "Reflections on violence" and they came to the conclusion that mythologies imposed from above never take which is a bit of an odd conclusion to reach when talking about someone so closely linked with nationalism.

Also some rulers managed to Protestantize/re-Catholicize their realms against the initial wills of their subjects.

Funnily enough though another recent context I heard this message in is the utter failure of US and Europeans to influence Wahhabist Islam.
