I didn't get notified for this, and there doesn't seem to be an option to turn on notifications for this kind of thing in settings.

Yeah, mentioning a user isn't going to give them a notification. It might be an interesting feature to suggest in

dw_suggestions, but probably pretty challenging to implement.

Good to know

You could make a post saying "reply to this with a link if you mention me and want to let me know" and make it sticky, but that's pretty clunky.
